Bristol Freighter

Experience during World War Two showed a need for a cargo aircraft that was able to take outsize loads that could be loaded and unloaded quickley.

The Bristol Freighter was a no frills low tec solution. Large 'clam shell' doors, previously seen on the Me 323 Gigant and Hamilcar gliders meant the aircraft could  cope with most of the awkward loads. Its fixed undercarriage and boxy design didn't exactly lend  its self to great elegance -  but it did the job.
